how to show only category in sidebar not its sub categories .

You can do this in a custom theme using CSS to hide classes qa-nav-cat-list-2, qa-nav-cat-list-3, qa-nav-cat-list-4

but how to show both categories and sub caegories.
i have tried very hard but did'nt find solution yet.
