first I must say I really like the sub category feature.. very powerful to have top down taxonomy to compliment free form tagging ( tags and tax ! )

we want to use sub-cats in certain contexts.. but currently, need to turn them off so there's just top level categories.

I don't see a way to do this in the GUI..  is there a function hack?     thanks..

You don't need to turn subcategories off - instead, you can move the categories so that they are all at the top level. This can be done in the 'Categories' page of the 'Admin' panel, by clicking 'move to different parent' when editing a category. You will be able to move them back later on if you choose.

Makes sense ..   but in our case..  as soon as we apply a category to a post. ..  and we go to edit the post. . it shows the sub-cat drop down too.. which we would like to turn off if poss..   so they don't have the chance to apply a sub in this particular app..   thanks

Any chance you can post a link? If there isn't really a 'Semantic Web 2.0' category as a subcategory of a different 'Semantic Web 2.0' category, then this looks like a bug.

here's how to duplicate the sub-category glitch..

create a new post..  give it a category...  none of the categories on the site have subs-cats..

after saving.. go back into the post and edit it..  in edit mode it will show a sub cat drop down.. even though no sub cat is there..   as shown..
