How does Q&A send email?

Question 1

This will sound rather stupid, but I just realized that I've installed Q&A site and did not configure an email server for it to use. Yet, the site sends out emails just fine.

How does this happen? I'm no PHP expert

Q2A uses a built-in version of PHPMailer, which (by default) uses PHP's inbuilt mail() function to send mail. This tends to use the host OS's default mailer - usually sendmail on unix-like systems.

Mine is sending admin emails but not favorites though. Would switching to SMTP help this?
