Is there a way to attach pictures rather than linking to a URL?

Yes. This feature is a bit hidden.

Follow these steps:

1. Navigate to admin/plugins

2. In the WYSIWYG plugin options make sure you enable Allow other content to be uploaded, e.g. Flash, PDF

3. When posting using the WYSIWYG editor click on the link button and you'll see an Upload tab now
