I know this is a small point, but stuff hidden by css will still be visible when viewing in browsers which don't support css - and, it's always preferable to remove rather than just hide stuff.

Yes, you can do this with an advanced HTML theme. For whatever you don't want in the HTML output, override the appropriate class function with one that does nothing.
