SnowFlat theme: Why are icon images used and additionally the fontello icon font?

Question

Investigating SnowFlat theme further, I just think, why do we use an icon font (which is quite good !) and then additionally many png images that represent icons (which is not so good, each icon is one request to the server). See folder images/icons.

 

PS: If the png images cannot be replaced by the icon font, I advice to use one big image that holds all icons and then reference by background-position. All big sites are doing that nowadays... or use font icons :)

It is recomened to use vector font icons due to the flexibility .

Suppose in Images you want four different colors , you need four diferent images . Same with size , height , width .

 

But if you use font icons everything is in your control , change what ever you want using simple css properties like color , font size etc .. And also they load faster .
 

Disadvantage is they wont supported in older Browser .

Yep, so Jatin decided to support old browsers as well, that's why he has chosen image icons as well?
