Why $ in custom page menu li class?

I have just noticed the system adding $ in custom page menu LI class Example qa-nav-main-page$ 

This creating an issue in writing rule for that particular item. Is the $ sign really requred in class?

I've created a custom page but I just couldn't reproduce this on 1.6.2. This is the output I'm getting:

<li class="qa-nav-main-item qa-nav-main-custom-3">

 

The "3" seems to match the pageid in the DB.

I've tried the four different page positions and I couldn't reproduce it. Actually, I always get the "custom-3" suffix
