Displaying views count on sidepanel in question page

Question

i am trying to display the question view count on the side panel ( like in stackoverflow) using a widget module,

in the output_widget function i tried to call the view_count from the theme-base.php but got nothing .  

Am i doing it wrong ? should i copy and past the view count code instead  , if so where do i find it ?
