Edit tags to accept a period. For example, vb.net

Question

As the title says I would like to edit the proper file to allow a tag to contain a period. For example, vb.net. As of right now it removes it and makes it into two words instead of one. What file do I need to change and what should I change?

 

I also need the ability to allow the + symbol in tags. For example: C++

Admin -> Posting -> Use comma as the only tag separator
