I'm not sure, but will check into it for Q2A 1.5.1. Perhaps it is possible to make the background white, which will improve things, but it won't be possible to maintain the transparency, since Q2A converts avatar images to JPEGs.

thanks for solving this in v1.5.1!

As I have a lot of hacks in the core, and thus not updating yet... can I just overwrite the qa-util-image.php without any problems?

I used the qa-util-image.php from the new release v1.5.2 and uploaded it. It works in all major browsers. Transparent pixels get white.
