How do I get started with Question2Answer?

I’m new to Question2Answer and I’m setting up my first Q&A website. I’d like to understand the basic features and recommended setup before adding more content.

What are the important settings I should configure first and are there any common mistakes beginners should avoid when setting up a new Question2Answer site?

Hello mate,

I installed your fork of the q2a-post-merge plugin:

on my website, and the server environment was as follows:

- PHP version: 8.2.33
- MySQL/MariaDB version: 11.8.8-MariaDB

However, when I try to activate the plugin from the website’s control panel, a blank white page (White Screen of Death) appears, and the plugin does not activate normally.

Could you please check what is causing the problem, and whether the plugin is compatible with PHP version 8.2.33 and MariaDB 11.8.8?

If there is a known issue or a specific requirement for the plugin to work, please could you explain this to me and guide me towards the appropriate solution.

If you are new to Question2Answer, it is best to start with the core configuration before adding plugins or customizations.

After installation, I would recommend checking these areas first:

  1. General settings – Configure the site name, description, language, URLs, and basic site preferences.

  2. User permissions – Decide what new users, registered users, editors, moderators, and administrators are allowed to do.

  3. Categories and tags – Create a simple category structure and define the tags you expect users to use. Avoid creating too many categories at the beginning.

  4. Question and answer settings – Review voting, comments, editing, anonymous posting, and moderation options according to your community requirements.

  5. Email settings – Test registration, password reset, and notification emails before launching the site.

  6. URL rewriting – Check that clean/neat URLs are working correctly. On Apache, this commonly depends on the .htaccess configuration and mod_rewrite.

  7. Security and backups – Remove the installation file after setup, protect your configuration file, keep PHP/Q2A updated, and schedule regular database backups.

  8. Plugins and themes – Start with the default setup and add only the plugins you actually need. Plugins can be installed through the qa-plugin directory and managed from the Admin panel.

A common beginner mistake is installing many plugins and changing core files immediately. It is better to first run a small test with a few users, create questions and answers, test moderation and notifications, and then customize the site.
