I'm planning to set up a community Q&A platform using Question2Answer but currently only have access to a shared hosting plan. I’d like to know if Q2A can be installed and run efficiently on shared hosting, and if there are any limitations or specific requirements I should be aware of. Are there any performance concerns or alternative hosting options recommended for small to medium communities?

Hi,

Yes, it is possible to run Question2Answer (Q2A) on shared hosting since it only requires PHP and a MySQL database, both commonly supported by shared hosting providers. Installation is straightforward and works well for small to medium-sized sites. However, performance may degrade with high traffic or limited server resources. For better speed and scalability, a VPS or dedicated server is recommended if your site grows.

Q2A is a lightweight PHP-based Q&A platform that works well on most shared hosting environments, as long as the host supports:

  • PHP 5.5 or higher (PHP 7+ recommended)

  • MySQL 5 or higher

  • Apache, Nginx, or compatible web server

  • cPanel or similar control panel (optional but helpful)

Just upload the Q2A files, create a MySQL database, configure the qa-config.php file, and run the installation from your browser. However, for large-scale traffic or heavy customization, a VPS or dedicated server is more suitable.
