How to safely rename a table attribute ( renanming table tuples)

Question

For example in below how can we rename 'email' to 'useremail' without causing the website break!

CREATE TABLE `qa_users` (

  `userid` int(10) UNSIGNED NOT NULL,                        

  `created` datetime NOT NULL,

  `createip` varbinary(16) NOT NULL,

  `email` varchar(80) NOT NULL,

It’s not really possible because the email field is referenced all over the code.

It doesn’t make sense why you would want to rename that field though.
