I noticed everyday I am getting a lot of people joing my site but they never post anything or do anything but they do verify their email but I haven’t even done much if any advertising for my site so can I put a captcha on the signup form? If so how? Thanks

You could enable recaptcha plugin. However it doesn't help: https://www.question2answer.org/qa/72074/this-q2a-is-loaded-with-spam-users

You could use other captcha plugins like: https://github.com/q2apro/q2apro-stop-spam which works very well for me.

or you could make your own captcha plugin.

I am not sure how, but spam bots frequently pass the captcha wall as well.

I designed No Spam plugin for my Q2A website. https://www.question2answer.org/qa/70308/premium-plugin-nospam-gyzgyn

You can buy it if you like its features. I have been using it on my own q2a website for 2 months now. And it successfully filtered out 100% of spam registrations. None of them could pass it now.

In addition to recaptcha add the "accept terms and conditions" check box and some extra fields in the registration form, I have done it and now there is no more spams. Check it here - https://chatrealty.in/register?to=
