What to put in .htaccess to make URLs look like /123/why-do-birds-sing if I use nginx?

If someone is using nginx + php-fpm, can you please share your .htaccess for making URLs look like /123/why-do-birds-sing ?

You don't need to modify .htaccess just that it must be enabled in the webserver.

However, I don't see this file at all in the root directory of my website:

root@myserver:/var/www/mywebsite# ls -la | grep -i ".htaccess"
root@myserver:/var/www/mywebsite#

Any ideas why?

p.s. I use nginx + php-fpm if it matters
