Theory behind the points

What is the theory behing giving diff points ?

How were these points assigned ? Is there a logic behind these points ? Do people typically change  these points.

Please explain.

I changed some of the points on my install, in particular the "multiply all points" I set to 1. I'm guessing most people make small changes but mostly keep the points the same.

I couldn't say exactly how the defaults were decided, but they were fairly sensible values based on gaining points for good questions and answers and losing points for incorrect answers etc.
