Can I create my own table prefixes in qa-config.php?

The ^ prefix is defined in qa-config.php. Can I create my own prefixes for my own non-core tables in this file also, provided I modify the function qa_db_apply_sub in qa-db.php?

Also, is this the best approach? I would like to separate the core Q2A from my own logic as much as possible.

Yes, this should work fine. Just make sure to pick a symbol which you'll never want to use in your SQL code!
