subdirectories are named by the first 3 digits of $blobid - Why?

Question

I am just checking the new blob upload features, @gidgreen: good work for the image resizing!

Now I am wondering, why there are folders created for the blobs. see "subdirectories are named by the first 3 digits of $blobid" from function qa_get_blob_directory($blobid) in qa-app-blobs.php
