How do you add a link in the "about" section of a profile page - standard HTML doesn't work but is there a workaround

Adding <a href="..."></a> displays that code in the profile. Is there different HTML code you can insert directly in the database to get it to link or do you have change the underlying page code? If so, what modification do you make? 1.4. TIA!
