Saving image in db! why? Is it really a good idea?

I wonder why the entire image uploaded by user (using ckeditor) gets saved in db? that makes the db huge and frankly inefficient!

advice over there: "objects smaller than 256K are best stored in a database". That's why I am resizing all uploaded images so that they finally get smaller than 100KB. See tiny script here: http://question2answer.org/qa/18980/tip-resize-jpg-images-on-upload
