Both can be divided into multiple sitemap.xml files. Google as an error that my sitemap.xml file a lot higher.

Your Sitemap contains too many URL. Create multiple Sitemap, containing up to 50,000 URL-address, and send all the files.

Yes you need to create one main XML which hold inner XMLs and inner XMLs should not have more than 50k URLs. http://www.sitemaps.org/faq.html
